Prime minister butts heads with leading Israeli news publisher

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu used his Twitter account Monday to accuse Noni Moses, publisher of the tabloid Yedioth Aharonot and popular news site Ynet, of orchestrating  a smear campaign against Netanyahu himself and his wife Sarah. In an unprecedented frontal attack on a media proprietor, Netanyahu charges Moses with backing vendetta by unscrupulous means to topple the ruling Likud, shut down the rival newspaper the pro-Likud Israeli Hayom and restore his own brutal newspaper to the top of the print press charts. These methods, says Netanyahu, will not deter him and his Likud party from their national missions. The message was run on Twitter as the Israeli election campaign heats up ahead of the March 17 vote, with Likud pulling ahead and gathering the support of the smaller parties at the expense of its leading rival, the Zionist Camp led by Yakov Herzog and Tzipi Livni.
