Prominent Syrian opposition activist Raed Ares shot dead
Raed Fares, founder of the independent radio station Radio Fresh, which broadcast from opposition-held areas inside Syria, was shot dead from a speeding car in the Idlib provincial town of Kafranbel on Friday. Killed with him was fellow opposition activist Hamoud Jneed. Fares had been a prominent opponent of the Assad regime, as well as Islamist groups, such as the Islamic State and Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, which is strong in Idlib. Four years ago he was injured in an ISIS assassination attempt.
