Putin to allow UN inspection of Ukraine’s nuclear complex

Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to provide UN investigators with “the necessary assistance” to access the Zaporizhzhia nuclear site. He spoke Friday night with French President Emmanuel Macron, who stepped in after Moscow rejected calls for the plant’s demilitarization. Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of shelling the nuclear plant, the largest in Europe, that was seized by Russian forces since March but continued to be operated by Ukraine technicians amid fears over its safety.

The UN’s nuclear watchdog has called for an immediate end to any military action near the plant, warning of “a very real risk of a nuclear disaster.”
