Putin’s words about taking Kiev in two weeks “quoted out of context”

The Kremlin accused EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso Tuesday of breaching diplomatic confidentiality and taking the words of President Vladimir Putin out of context. Putin was quoted by Italy’s La Repubblica as saying to Barroso: “If I want to, I can take Kiev in two weeks.” This comment was interpreted as a threat to the EU not to step up sanctions against Moscow. Putin’s foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said the comment was “taken out of context and carried a completely different meaning.”
