Ruling UK Conservatives win big in local polls ahead of national election

In the local elections that took place across Great Britain Friday, PM Theresa May’s Conservatives won their biggest gains in 40 years. With five weeks to go before the general election, they gained more than 500 seats and seized 11 extra councils, mainly at the expense of opposition Labor, which came third in Scotland, UKIP, which lost all its seats and the Lib Dems. May said she was taking nothing for granted and would campaign hard to win the June 8 general election, which she called to shore up Britain’s bargaining position for terms for its exit from the European Union.
