Runoff for municipal elections in 55 Israeli towns
Runoff mayoral elections take place on Tuesday in 55 Israeli towns and local councils where no contender won more than 40 percent of the vote in the first round two weeks ago. They include the most hotly contested race for mayor of Jerusalem between Moshe Leon, who is backed by a powerful segment of the ultra-religious community, and the non-religious newcomer Ofer Berkovitch. The Hof Ashkelon vote was postponed due to voters being confined to shelters by Palestinian rockets.
