Russia says UK’s draft UN resolution on Syria is premature

A British draft UN resolution mandating military force against Syria failed to attain agreement Wednesday among the Security Council’s five permanent members. The Russian ambassador called it premature before the UN chemical inspectors report on their investigation in Syria. If the motion were put to the vote at this time, it would be blocked by the Russian and Chinese vetoes which are standard for any motions against Syria. The motion was tabled by the UK as momentum built up among Western allies for a military strike to punish Syria for using chemical weapons.
