Russia warns US against intervention in Venezuela

Moscow Thursday warned Washington against military intervention in Venezuela saying this would trigger a “catastrophic scenario.” Sergei Ryabkov, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, said Moscow would stand with Venezuela to protect its sovereignty and the principle of non-interference in its domestic affairs. On Wednesday, opposition leader Juan Gualdo declared himself interim president, winning the backing of the US and many Latin American neighbors, amid mass demonstrations against Nicolas Maduro, who promptly ordered US diplomats to leave the country.

The Russian folks would do well to rise up and knock him out before he does something REALLY stupid.

He is standing on the brink in Syria and now Venezuela, . . .

He needs to go get a couple Russian doughnuts, a cup of coffee, look out the window, . . . and cool his heels.

Russia is an aggressor nation that is in no position to warn anyone about anything, especially after invading and occupying the sovereign Republic of Ukraine.

Please lets conduct a logical conversation. Who threatened here first, was the US to intervene militarily in Venezuela around August 2018. Do we agree on that?

I don’t think folk need to worry much about the “warning”. It’s pretty much just posturing.

Russia benefits from Maduro staying in power. Maduro and his predecessor effectively decimated Venezuela’s oil industry which means there is less oil on the market and that means a little more money in Putin’s pocket.

Russia makes a rather non-specific warning which doesn’t imply real action in the very unlikely event that the USA were to make a big military move on Venezuela. If the USA follows the expected course and doesn’t invade Venezuela (odds are nearly 100% we won’t) then Putin claims he stopped us and there are idiots who will believe him and that increases his standing on the world scene.

If something extremely odd occurred and the USA did take big military action then Putin will find something bad happening in the USA and say, “See, I warned you not to do that” and won’t do anything of significance.

For now it’s a freebie. Putin gets to claim he stopped the USA from doing something the USA wasn’t going to do anyway. Maduro stays in power and that means Russia gets to sell more oil at higher prices for years to come. Maduro is a fool who will be grateful to Russia for doing nothing meaningful. Maduro will likely sell basing rights to Russia for cheap – or free, and Russia benefits from that as well. Putin sells more arms to Maduro and gets to buy/build another mansion!

It’s great for Putin! It doesn’t help Venezuela but that’s not something Putin will see as a problem.

I am amazed that no one else in this forum is tired of the US dismal record of 65 years of failed regime changes. Every one has taken the targeted country from bad to worse, and the american taxpayer keeps cheerfully footing the bill.
