Russian-backed Syrian peace conference postponed to February

A Russian-backed Congress of Syrian peoples in the Russian city of Sochi scheduled for November has been postponed until February, Russia’s RIA news agency reported on Monday, citing a diplomatic source. The event, called the Syrian Congress on National Dialogue, was postponed after some opposition groups objected to President Vladimir Putin’s initiative.  DEBKAfile adds: This is a major setback for the peace strategy Putin is personally orchestrating for Syria. Last week, he called a Russian-Iranian-Turkish summit in Sochi to set out the future steps for Syria, after summoning Bashar Assad to Sochi to get him on board.
