Salafist gunmen attack Egyptian Sinai post
A day after Egypt claimed to have completed a military offensive for cutting down Islamist terrorist activity in Sinai, Salafi gunmen attacked an Egyptian army post at Sheikh Zuweid in northern Sinai Tuesday with recoilless grenades and automatic weapons. There is no word of casualties. DEBKAfile: Some Cairo sources say the Egyptian army has decided to remove itself from the peninsula and hand security over to the Interior Ministry, and so follow the example of the sacked defense minister, Field Marshal Mohammed Tantawi, who for years passed responsibility for Sinai to Egyptian Intelligence services. For now, no Egyptian force is able or willing to take on the 6,000 armed Salafists associated with al Qaeda on the loose in Sinai.
