Saudi delegation visits Damascus to reopen embassy
A Saudi delegation headed by Saudi General Intelligence Directorate chief Khalid al-Humaidan met Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus on Monday. They agreed to reopen the Saudi embassy as the first step towards normalizing relations after years of hostility. Assad was told that Riyadh would support Syria’s return to the Arab League, after being suspended since 2011 over its brutal civil war, in which the Saudis backed the opposition.
This development ties in with the opening of Saudi-Iran talks to patch up their long feud against the background of the Biden administration’s plan to return to the 2015 nuclear agreement and possible lifting of sanctions on Tehran..
