Schiphol airport evacuated in major security alert

Armed police with ambulances were rushed to Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam Wednesday night to investigate a “suspicious situation” on board an Air Europa A330-200 flight to Madrid. According to Dutch media, the pilot raised the alert relating to a hijacking or hostage situation. Dutch emergency authorities have issued a “Grip 3 report,” a procedure usually initiated in case of “an incident or serious event with major consequences for the population.” There are reportedly 27 passengers and crew aboard the plane. Utrecht Central Station, the country’s busiest railway hub, has also been evacuated, but there is no word if this is tied to the airport incident.
