Second runway in construction at Russia’s Syria air base

While conducting a tour for Russian correspondents this week, the commander of the Russian Khmeimim air base in Syrian Latakia reported that a second runway was under construction to expand the number of aircraft it can serve. Declining to reveal his name for security reasons, the officer reported that 30 fighter-bombers and assault helicopters are based at Kheimim at present: Su-35S, Su-34 and Su-24 planes and Mi-SAMTS, Mi-35 helicopters. Additional forces and aircraft will arrive when the expansion work is finished. The air base will also have a new fuel supply system to shorten the aircrafts’ preparations for flight operations.
