Security Council emergency session on Syria postponed
At the closed-door session Tuesday night, the US, France and Britain planned to table a resolution for placing Syria’s chemical weapons under international control and destroyed, with “extremely serious” consequences for violations including a military option. Moscow balked and demanded a non-binding declaration without sanctions rather than a resolution. The session was postponed without a new date over this sharp disagreement.
Secretary of State John Kerry said the US cannot wait long for a concrete Russian plan to remove Syria’s chemical weapons. He said Syria has stockpiled about 1,000 tonnes of numerous chemical agents.
Obama addresses the American people again early Wednesday.
