Settlers evicted from Beit El structures after clashing with police

Clashes erupted before dawn Tuesday between dozens of youths and police who came to evacuate two apartment buildings under construction in the West Bank settlement of Beit El which the High Court ordered demolished by Friday, July 31. A Border Police unit has moved into the buildings pending their demolition. Dozens of youths were detained for unruly conduct and then released in Jerusalem. The settlers have meanwhile obtained a building permit from the Judea and Samaria Civil administration and will petition the High Court to reverse its ruling. . Pro-settlement groups, including members of the government, have condemned the incident and are holding Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister responsible. Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, challenging the High Court ruling, said that the government is under no compulsion to demolish the structures.
