Several Turkish soldiers killed in major PKK attack
Several Turkish soldiers were killed Sunday in a major attack by Kurdistan Workers' Party-PKK militants in the southeastern province of Hakkari. There was no immediate official casualty toll. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu broke off a trip and summoned an emergency security meeting in Ankara. The attack started with a mine explosion against two military vehicles in a convoy in the district of Hakkari, followed by gunfire on the troops.
Turkish F-4 and F-16 warplanes carried out strikes against 10 Kurdish targets. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan denounced the attack in a live television interview.
