Shabaab car bombs and gunfire kill 17 Somali soldiers

The extremist Shabaab insurgents attacked the Barire military base 50km south of Mogadishu Friday, killing 17 soldiers with suicide car bombs and gunfire. They claimed to have taken control of the base and a nearby town and seized seven vehicles mounted with machine guns.
