Shanahan abruptly resigns as acting US defense secretary

Patrick Shanahan who headed the US Department of Defense since last July, taking over from Jim Mattis, abruptly resigned on Tuesday “to devote more time to my family.” President Donald Trump, after praising Shanahan’s job, appointed Mark Esper, Secretary of the Army, as new Acting Defense Secretary.

Esper, 65, has served in the Pentagon with ministerial rank since 2017. He came to the administration from  senior posts at the Raytheon arms giant.
