Shas Torah Sages Council condemns Haredi riots

Rabbi Shalom Cohen, president of the Shas Torah Sages Council of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, ordered its followers on Monday to shun the violent protests staged in recent days by ultra-Orthodox students as “categorially opposed to the way of the Torah.” The edict came after days of clashes with police forces in several towns and the torching of a public transport bus Sunday night in downtown Bnei Brak.

Shas is one of two ultra-Orthodox (haredi) parties which are elected to the Knesset and serve in government. The other is the United Torah Judaism. Both run wide networks of schools and seminaries, some of which defied the national shutdown order during the current covid lockdown.
