Social Democrats narrowly beat Merkel’s bloc in German electio

A partial count of Germany’s election results on Monday showed the Social Democrats with 25.9pc of the vote just ahead of 24.1pc for outgoing chancellor Angela Merkel’s Union bloc. Both parties will be wooing the lesser factions, the Greens and the Free Democrats to form a coalition. Until it is cobbled together, Merkel who is due to retire after 16 years at the helm, will stay on as caretaker.
