Spain’s King Carlos to abdicate

After nearly 40 years on the Spanish throne, King Juan Carlos I, 76, has decided to step down and pass the throne to Crown Prince Felipe, 46, – Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced on television Monday.
He offered no reason for the abdication. Carlos was highly popular for his defense of Spanish democracy after the death of the dictator Franco in 1975, but his popularity flagged as Spain sank into deep recession
