Sri Lanka in mourning as death toll from terror rises to 310

The president of Sri Lanka declared Tuesday a day of national mourning and granted the military sweeping police arrest powers as the toll of the Easter bombings rose to 310 dead including more than 30 foreigners. The suicide bombings struck three churches and three luxury hotels Sunday in the island nation’s deadliest violence since a devastating civil war ended in 2009. The government has shut down some social media, armed security forces patrol the largely deserted, central streets in the capital of Colombo, and a night curfew went into effect. Adding to the panic, on Monday, three unexploded bombs blew up inside a van parked near one of the stricken churches as police were trying to defuse them.
