State Dept gives green light to modernizing Kuwait arms

The US State Department on Tuesday approved a huge recapitalization deal with Kuwait worth $1.7 billion for extending the life of 218 Abrams M1A2 tanks. The deal includes machine guns, over 1,000 night vision goggles, communications equipment, technical services and combat training. The State Department said the deal, if approved by Congress, will promote peace and stability in the region. The tanks are to be equipped with advanced thermal management systems and weapon systems. Among the contractors for the deal are Raytheon, Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics.
