Suicide bombing near home of Iraqi PM-designate Abadi

A suicide bomber attacked a checkpoint Wednesday near the home of Iraq’s Prime Minister-designate Haider al-Abadi, who was brought in to form a national unity government to fight advancing jihadist Islamic State forces. No casualties were reported. Abadi won US and Iranian support for replacing the divisive fellow-Shiite Nouri al-Maliki. Australian PM Tony Abbott speaking in London Wednesday did not rule out sending combat forces to Iraq. Tuesday the US authorized sending a further 130 military personnel to Kurdistan in northern Iraq “to develop options for helping civilians in escape from the IS who are trapped on Mount Sinjar.” The EU gave the go-ahead for members to send arms to the Kurdish forces. The US and UK have dropped three shipments of aid to the thousands of Yazidis sranded on the mountain.
