Syria fabricates report: “Russia intercepted Israeli spy plane over N. Lebanon”

Why would Syrian military sources put out a false story purporting that Russia “intercepted an Israeli spy plane over North Lebanon” along with a map and coordinates? This fabrication coincided with a New Year message from President Vladimir Putin to Bashar Assad pledging “to continue to provide all forms of support to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nation.” The Syrian sources don’t elaborate on “intercepted” – whether the non-existent flight was allegedly downed, blown up, or forced to land. In any case, Israeli spy planes did not fly over northern Lebanon; nor were they intercepted by Russia.
