Syrian troops, rebels, still fighting for chemical arms base

At least 14 people were killed just in day-long clashes Friday for control of the Al-Safira military complex south of Aleppo where Bashar Assad houses a large chemical weapons store. Air force jets and helicopters bombarded the rebels, many of them adherents of al Qaeda-linked and extremist Salafist organizations.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he contacted Syrian opposition leaders through the Russian embassy in Egypt and invited them for a meeting, but was snubbed. In Turkey, officials reported two defecting Syrian generals were “regional Syrian Air Force commanders.”
