Syrian troops retake Damascus outskirts in raging battles

In heavy fighting, a Syrian army counter-offensive by large mobile armored strike groups, backed by fighter planes and surface missiles, Friday cut short a major rebel drive into the heart of Damascus which aimed to reach the presidential palace. Fourth Armored Division forces drove the rebels from their strategic position at Kamaz on the Damascus-Aleppo highway and continued the battle to push them out of outlying districts of the capital which they had captured.
