Tehran claims to have thwarted assassination bid against Soleimani

Iranian media quoting a Revolutionary Guards statement report that Tehran stopped a “regional plot” for the assassination of IRGC Maj. Gen, Qassem Soleimani and arrested the conspirators. Their identities and nationalities are not revealed. According to the claim, the assassins planted 350-500kg of explosive in a tunnel under the location of the burial ceremony for Soleimani’s father and prepared to detonate the charge when the general arrived.

DEBKAfile reports that this “story” is full of holes, not least because the funeral itself took place two years ago, another fact that it is not mentioned. Our sources say it hard to explain what Tehran hoped to achieve by this rigmarole. Perhaps the regime found it necessary to haul out a unifying stratagem in the face of popular hardship, after its snub for attempts to arrange a summit between the Iranian and US presidents failed to result in a single US sanction being lifted
