Tehran: UK mediator sent to discuss freeing British tanker

Britain has sent a mediator to Tehran to discuss the freeing of the British-flagged Stena Impero tanker seized by Iran last week, the head of the Supreme Leader’s office said on Wednesday, according to the semi-official Tasnim news site. This report, appearing on Wednesday, hours before the new UK PM Boris Johnson’s took office, is not confirmed by London.  The vessel was seized after British marines impounded the Iranian Grace 1 supertanker heading for Syria earlier this month.

When President Reagan was elected in 1979, he sent a message to the “Supreme Leader” of Iran that was unmistakable in tone and directness. “Release the hostages before my inauguration at noon on January 20, 1980 or you will cease to exist as a government by sunset that day.”

The hostages were released that morning.

THAT is the way to exercise diplomacy. You don’t – you CAN’T – ‘meditiate’ with savages. You tell them what needs to happen and what will happen if THAT doesn’t happen.

correction: the election of President Reagan was one year later – in 1980. His inauguration, in 1981.

Jersey Prophet: You are fantasising. Nothing of the sort happened.

Mr. Carter continued to negotiate for the hostages’ release until the end of his term of office. Finally, on Jan. 19, 1981, Algerian-mediated talks between the U.S. and Iran produced an agreement to end the crisis.

Looks like you are lying about Reagan. Anything can be checked for veracity. Why did you need to do that?
