Hundreds of Muslim worshipers rioted on Temple Mount on Sunday morning to prevent Jews from visiting the holy site on the Tisha Be’Av anniversary of the destruction of the Jewish Temples. The disorder erupted shortly after police had denied hundreds of Jewish worshipers entry to the shrine while permitting 50,000 Muslims to enter and celebrate Eid al-Adha, the “Festival of Sacrifice.” The Muslim rioters hurled rocks and chairs at the police, injuring four. The order thereupon went out to bar Temple Mount to further Muslim entry and open the shrine belatedly to Jewish worship. In the clashes, several Muslim rioters were injured and the ringleaders arrested. The decision on access to the shrine had been previously left to the discretion of the Jerusalem police commander.
