The IDF prepares for aggression by Iran’s “second circle”

Israel has made preparations in case of attack from Iraq or Yemen – whether by Iranian forces or by pro-Iran militias or Yemeni Houthi insurgents, during the days around the anniversary of the killing of Iran’s top general Qasem Soleimani by a US drone a year ago. This scenario was supported on Saturday by Iranian FM Mohammad Javad Zarif’s drumming up of a plot alleging Israeli agents were in Iraq to incite attacks on Americans. This fake event was to have given President Trump the pretext for hitting Iran before he leaves the White House.  If true, it would also provide Iran with a pretext to hit back at Israel.
Israeli forces were also on elevated preparedness on the country’s northern border, after indications emerged of Hizballah’s plans for an escalation. “The northern border is heading for an event, even perhaps to multiple days of combat,” said a senior IDF officer on Friday. “If and when such an attack does take place,” he said, “Israel would respond with unprecedented force.”
