The IDF responds to DEBKAfile’s reference to tunnel warfare

A high-ranking Israeli military official spoke Tuesday of progress in the search for a method for tapping and destroying secret tunnels designed by terrorists for surprise attacks inside Israel. Monday, DEBKAfile referred exclusively to this threat as one of Hizballah’s options for striking back at Israel for its deadly air strike on the Golan. The IDF, said the official, had developed three types of technology for dealing with the dangerous tunnels and would soon choose the most effective for application. The Yahalom unit of the Engineering Corps, which focuses on research into this subterranean menace, has been expanded and regular infantry brigades are receiving special training in dealing with them.
