The Referendum Law to be anchored as Basic Law
The Referendum Law's renforcement as a Basis Law bill, approved Wednesday by a joint panel of the Knesset House and the Law & Constitution &, Justice Committees, will be referred for final vote to the Knesset plenum in the second week of March. It is part of a coalition legislative package which also covers ultra-Religious military service and electoral reform motions. As a Basic Law it cannot be challenged by petitions to the Supreme Court. It requires any treaty conceding sovereign land to win the support of 80 MKs. If only 61 approve, the treaty will be brought to referendum. If the treaty wins less than half the Knesset, it is rejected.
