The UN Security Council calls for ceasefire in Gaza

“Strong support for an immediate and unconditional humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza was expressed by the UN Security Council early Monday in a call, which fell short of a binding resolution. It came as Hamas rocket fire lessened overnight, on the eve of the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr, after a massive barrage Sunday night directed at a wide range of Israeli targets, in breach of its own call for a ceasefire. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Sunday that adopting the Egyptian initiative is the only path to a sustainable quiet. Peace will be achieved through demilitarizing Gaza and social and economic relief for its inhabitants.
