The US rejects deal for easing tensions with North Korea

The Chinese proposal for North Korea to suspend nuclear and missile programs while the US and South Korea pause military exercises was rejected by Washington Thursday as “not a viable deal.” US State Department acting spokesman Mark Toner said US efforts to engage Pyongyang had “fallen short” and the US was looking for new ways “to convince them, to persuade them, that it’s in their interests.” US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said the world was “not dealing with a rational person” in the North Korean leader but “unbelievable, irresponsible arrogance.”  Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi compared the US and North Korea to two speeding trains that are set for a head on collision.
