Three days mourning in Egypt for Hosni Mubarak
Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, who ruled for 30 years until he was toppled in the Arab Spring of 2011, died in a military hospital of illness at the age of 91. After assuming the presidency upon the assassination of Anwar Sadat by violent Islamist extremists, Mubarak led his country into relative prosperity and close ties with Washington. He also upheld the peace pact his predecessor signed with Israel. The coup leaders who unseated him put him and his sons on trial for corruption. President Abdel-Fatteh El-Sisi ordered his release. Announcing three days of mourning for the ex-president, El-Sisi’s spokesman issued this statement: “The presidency mourns with deep sorrow the death of former President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak.The deceased was the commander of the Air Force during the October War, which restored the dignity of the Arab nation.”
