Three setbacks for Biden: His financial plan defeated, Republicans regain Virginia

During his absence at the Glasgow earth summit, US President Joe Biden on Wednesday sustained three blows at home. The Senate defeated his $1.75 trillion economic bill after Democratic Senator Terry McAuliffe crossed the floor to join the Republican opposition. Outsider Glenn Youngkin beat the Democratic Governor Terry McAuliffe for the governate of Virginia. In New Jersey’s closer-than-expected governor race, Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli and incumbent Democrat Phil Murphy were locked in a virtual draw. Both states were won easily by the Democrats last year. These results are seen as omens for the coming mid-term elections and a sign that independent voters (19pc of the electorate) are turning their backs on the Biden administration.
