Trump aims to curb legal immigration, create skills-based system
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced new legislation aimed at slashing legal immigration to the US by 50 percent annually. The bill cuts the number of refugees entering the country by half and limits the number of green cards issued to low-skilled workers seeking to reunite with family members residing in the US. In a statement at the White House, Trump said "This competitive application process will favor applicants who can speak English, financially support themselves and their families and demonstrate skills that will contribute to our economy". However, it is unclear whether there is sufficient congressional support for such a bill.
