Trump discussed anti-ISIS campaign in phone call to Erdogan
US President Donald Trump was the only Western leader to congratulate Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan on his slender win in the referendum that gave him sweeping new powers. The White House said that in their phone call Monday, they also discussed the war on Syria which had soured their relations, the campaign against the Islamic State and “the need to cooperate against all groups that use terrorism to achieve their ends.”
According to the Ankara version of the conversation, Trump said, “I value our friendship, we have many important things to do together” and he “vowed close cooperation Syria, Iraq and the fight against Kurdish militants.”
DEBKAfile: This vow, if confirmed, would run contrary to the Trump administration’s known plans to enlist Kurdish militias as the spearhead for the Raqqa offensive against ISIS.
