Trump eyes Gen. Mattis for Defense Secretary

The retired Marine Gen. James Mattis was one of several people president elect Donald Trump met in New Jersey Saturday, after Mitt Romney. Asked if he was offering the general the job of defense secretary, Trump said “we’ll see,” while posing with him for cameras. A transition team official confirmed that Mattis, who has commander experience in Afghanistan and both US wars in Iraq, was a strong candidate for the job. The Wall Street journal reported that Trump was also considering for defense retired Army Gen. David Petraeus, whom Mattis succeeded as commander of US Central Command.
