Trump floats – then rescinds – proposal to postpone election
US President Donald Trump proposed Thursday to postpone the presidential election due in November “until people can properly, securely and safely vote.” A few hours later, he backtracked.
He was referring to the high proportion of mail-in voting necessitated by health concerns during the coronavirus pandemic. This, he said, would engender a high level of “inaccuracies and fraud.” Any decision to change the date of the election would require approval from Congress. Trump’s suggestion has drawn fire from some fellow Republicans as well as the Democrats.
