Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan claimed Friday night that his army had come within 6km of Afrin town and placed its estimated million Kurdish inhabitants under siege. DEBKAfile’s military sources say he was exaggerating. The Turkish army is not yet there. It has taken from Kurdish forces the town of Jinderes, 20km from Afrin town, and a few Turkish units are 4-6km away, but there is no siege on the town. In Washington, talks between US and Turkish teams of diplomats for stalling the Turkish offensive against the Kurds in Afrin wound down Friday without an accord.
