Turkish FM: US decision to arm Syrian Kurds endangers Turkey
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Wednesday urged the US to reverse its decision to provide heavy weapons to the Syrian Kurdish forces fighting ISIS. During a visit to Montenegro, the minister claimed that the weapons provided to the YPG militia would fall into the hands of the PKK Kurdish underground. He said "the PKK and YPG are terrorist organizations", adding that "Every weapon seized by them is a threat to Turkey." The comments came ahead of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's meeting with US President Donald Trump on May 16. Meanwhile, Turkish Defense Minister Fikri Isik said Wednesday that the decision to arm the Syrian Kurds could precipitate a crisis between Washington and Ankara, which are both members of NATO.
