Turkish troops close in on Afrin town. Ankara: US must stop Kurdish fighters reaching enclave

DEBKAfile reports: the Turkish invasion force Wednesday reach a point that is 9km north of the Kurdish town of Afrin in the enclave of that name. The town’s million Kurdish inhabitants are now in the line of Turkish fire, a quarter of them refugees who fled from northern Afrin as Turkish troops advanced. Ibrahim Kalin, a spokesman for Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, called on the US to prevent Kurdish YPG militia fighters from traveling to Afrin to help their countrymen. US military sources voice concern about the number of YPG fighters abandoning the fight against ISIS.

I would be ashamed of the US if we don’t tell Turkey to halt their attack on the Kurds. The Kurds have assisted the US in our goals. At the very least, we can prevent the killing of their civilians. Heck, assist the Kurdish fighters in getting to Afrin as quickly as possible. Peace.

Oh, the US has already told Turkey to stop. They did not listen, and the US is not ready to do anything about it. As often happens America is abandoning allies the their fate. Israel was also worried about this for a good chunk of Obama’s tenure.

Think what you may about Russia, but if you are a Russian ally in good standing with Moscow – they have your back. America’s track record is not good.

Nothing that a generous gift of soviet or chinese anti-tank and anti-air missiles would not solve. We have seen a vivid enough preview of a restored ottoman empire. It would proceed from genocide to genocide, as it always has done.

i hope the US will not abandon the Kurds of Afrin. A supply of Javelin man-portable anti-tank missiles at least would help the YPG no end. If the US do abandon the YPG in Afrin can they really expect anybody to fight for them in the future.
