Detective Joseph Seals, 39, and three civilians were killed by two gunmen in Jersey City on Tuesday. The gunmen were then shot dead in a multi-hour standoff in the area of JC Kosher Supermarket.
The incident began when Detective Seals approached the suspects at a cemetery as part of an investigation and was shot dead. The suspects fled the scene in a stolen U-Haul as police descended on the cemetery. Armed with long guns, they then killed three more victims inside the market and injured several cops. Witnesses said the gunshots continued for another two hours as law enforcement flocked to the scene. Former NYPD Commissioner Bernie Kerik’s son was reportedly one of the officers who killed the two suspects in a shootout after heavily armed police crashed into the store in an armored vehicle.
President Donald Trump tweeted that he had been briefed on the situation and was monitoring it.
