UK prime minister, chief rabbi blast Jewish wedding at London school

London police broke up a wedding party at the Haredi Yesodey Hatorah Senior Girls’ School in Stamford Hill, North London, on Thursday night. PM Johnson, who had just warned that covid restrictions in the UK could continue into the summer, supported the police action against people who “flagrantly and selfishly ignored the rules.”

Chief Rabbi Mrvis wrote on Twitter: “At a time when we are all making such great sacrifices, it amounts to a brazen abrogation of the responsibility to protect life” and “such illegal behavior is abhorred by the overwhelming majority of the Jewish community.” The school denied knowledge of the event and was “horrified.” The police slapped fines of up to £10,000 ($14,000) on the organizers.
