Up to 1,000 convicts released while still under sentence

The prison doors opened  prematurely on Thursday for 957 convicts after the High Court ruled that the jails were overcrowded and prisoners were not being given the minimum of living space. Among the prisoners awarded early release were 238 men convicted of violence within their families and 42 sex offenders.
