A US-backed Syrian force reaches Iraqi border

The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) reached the Iraqi border Monday, effectively cutting off the Syrian government army from the border crossings north of Abu Kamal. They pushed east from the Tanak oil fields after capturing several kilometers of desert terrain, where Islamic State fugitives are holed up. While the Syrian Army and Hizballah have liberated the main cities in Deir Ez- Zour, they do not control the province’s largest oil fields and now they are unable to push north along the Iraqi border.
