US, French, Algerian forces take on AQIM in S. Libya – British sources
British intelligence sources report that the US, France and Algeria have sent special forces to South Libya against al Al Qaeda in the Maghreb (AQIM). They are hunting for is leader, Mokhtar Belmokhtar, who led the Algerian gas field attack in 2012 and killed a large number of foreign hostages. The multinational counter-terror force is also striving to prevent AQIM from sending reinforcements in support of the Islamist militias fighting in Tripoli against the pro-US Libyan general Khalifa Hafter, who is leading an offensive to install a stable Libyan government rid of Islamists.
