US government shutdown hits Day One of working week

Staffs of federal departments of housing, environment, education, transport, treasury  and commerce, in addition to the military and intelligence services, were hit by the shutdown of the US government as the working week began Monday. Hundreds of thousands of federal workers were forced to take unpaid leave. The Senate struggled to end the stalemate Sunday but failed. The Democrats are holding out on the immigration issue before approving the budget.
